Scenario:
When we try to export a report to excel, it opens in any other program except MS Excel. example: Dreamweaver or any other HTML editing programs or browsers like Internet explorer, Firefox, Safari etc.

Cause:
In Web Timesheet you can choose which file format will be used to export reports to Excel.
The options available are:

  • .xml (For Excel on Windows¬† XP and later versions)
  • .csv (For Older Excel Versions)

You will not be able to export a report to Microsoft Excel when other programs are associated with file extensions .xml and .csv. Instead of opening in Microsoft Excel, it opens in the other programs such as Internet explorer, Firefox, Safari, Notepad etc.

Resolution:

Change the excel export format in Preferences

  • Select Settings from the top menu. (The Edit User Preferences page is displayed)
  • Change Report Excel Export Format as desired
  • Click on Save.

Change the file type association in Windows

  • Windows XP
    • Open My Documents or My Computer from the Start menu.
    • Click on Tools on the menu bar.
    • Click on the Folder Options. A dialog box with tabs will appear.
    • Click on the File Types Tab. Let Windows fill the information box.
    • Scroll to the file extension in question (.XML or .CSV)
    • Click the Change button
    • Select Microsoft Excel from the list and then click on OK.
  • Windows Vista and 7
    • Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs.
    • Select Associate a file type or protocol with a program
    • Scroll down to XML and select it.
    • Click on Change program. Windows will display the suggested programs
    • Select Microsoft Office or Microsoft Excel from the list and then click on OK.
    • Scroll to CSV and select it.
    • Click on Change program. Windows will give you the suggested programs
    • Select Microsoft Office or Microsoft Excel from the list and then click on OK.
