Malaysia: Additional Holiday Declared for Hari Raya Aidilfitri
On April 20, 2023, the Prime Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim declared additional days of the holiday for the celebration of the end of Ramadan.
In accordance with Section 8 of the Holiday Act (“HA”), the Minister may, by notification in the Gazette, appoint a day to be observed as a public holiday in addition to any of the public holidays declared under the First Schedule of the Act.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a public holiday in Malaysia. It is a time when Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. The announcement of the date for Hari Raya Aidilfitri is based on the sighting of the new moon.
The Government gave a press release on April 20, 2023, that the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri will fall on Saturday, April 22, 2023. Consequently, Friday, April 21, 2023, and Monday, April 24, 2023, shall be observed as paid public holidays. Therefore, it shall be a four-day long weekend in conjunction with the festival.
