Throughout the year, we hear many stories of great businesses who are unnecessarily doubling or even tripling their time-entry processes. Such was the case at Contoural, a business consulting firm based in Mountain View, California, where employees were submitting their timesheets in two different formats: one for internal use and another for client billing. Additionally, that same billing data was then manually entered into Contoural’s accounting system. This slow, time-consuming process was neither efficient nor fun for any of Contoural's 50+ staff. […]

Such was the case at Contoural, a business consulting firm based in Mountain View, California, where employees were submitting their timesheets in two different formats: one for internal use and another for client billing. Additionally, that same billing data was then manually entered into Contoural’s accounting system. This slow, time-consuming process was neither efficient nor fun for any of Contoural’s 50+ staff.

To rectify this, Contoural swapped its outdated time-tracking methods for Web TimeSheet. The hassle-free solution has streamlined the company’s time keeping, simplified its billing process and eliminated the use of multiple spreadsheets.

Read this case study to see how Web TimeSheet has saved Contoural’s consultants 30% of their administrative time, resulting in more time for billable activities.

The first infographic we created from data in our new Replicon Productivity Index showed how employees used their days-away-from-work. Now we’ve focused on another area of the data, seeing how companies spend their travel dollars. You hear and read a lot about how the current economy is causing companies to look for ways to cut expenses, including reductions-in-force, hiring and pay freezes, and in some cases curtailing or even eliminating business travel. But as shown in our new infographic, companies are not necessarily spending less than they could for travel. In fact, their on-the-road expenses appear to be rising quickly. [...]

But as shown in our new infographic, companies are not necessarily spending less than they could for travel. In fact, their on-the-road expenses appear to be rising quickly.

Some findings: On average, the cost of a flight for business travel is $440. That’s over 25% higher than the average cost of domestic airfare. Hotel stays account for 22% of companies’ travel budgets. Maybe that’s not surprising, but it seemed a bit of an eye-opener to discover that entertainment expenses amount to just 2% of travel outlays. So perhaps companies are getting down to business out-of-town without much wining-and-dining!

Have a look at the travel infographic here, and see how your costs compare.

We’ve just released the new Smart Interface for our SaaS-based Web TimeSheet products. And I’m happy to say I think it’s a terrific step forward. It actually does feel faster, look better, and help you get things done more intuitively. Could I have said otherwise? Indeed I could. In fact, I can recall only a few times when I upgraded a computer program and was pleasantly surprised by how well its developers “got it.” I think the key in those instances was that the software’s interface had been redesigned in subtle ways, so I felt comfortable with the changes. New features seemed like natural extensions of the ones I already knew. But I’ve also endured upgrades that—while they were supposed to be improvements—forced me up a steep learning curve. So, when I heard that Replicon planned to redo its timesheet interface, I hoped for the best. [...]

I needn’t have worried —I love the new Smart Interface. All the features I used before are still there, as well as my customized settings, but the new intelligence and speed are terrific.

You’ll see for yourself if you’re one of our SaaS customers. (If not, sign up for a free trial)

Here are a half-dozen new things I really like:

New look-and-feel
The interface is easier to use and just plain looks better. Your eye falls more readily on the items you need.

Faster performance
You spend less time completing timesheets, running reports, etc. Everything executes up to 14 times faster, thanks to the web-based Ajax technology our developers used “under the hood.”

Redesigned task selector
There are no more pop-up windows. You select clients, projects, and tasks directly from the timesheet itself.

Integrated search and auto-complete
It’s easier to locate your projects and tasks. Just start typing the name of a client, project, or task and you instantly see a list of options to choose from.

Enhanced copy-from feature
It’s easier to base a new timesheet on an old one. You don’t have to duplicate everything—you can copy only what you need.

Real-time error detection
If there’s an issue with data you’re working on, it’s identified on-screen before you submit the timesheet, so you can fix it immediately.

Log in and see what you think! We’d love to hear from you about our new Smart Interface.

Can mining piles of data lead to profitable insights about employee vacations? We reckoned the answer to that (and much more) was hidden in the troves of time-tracking info we host for our customers. Access to this kind of powerful aggregated data is one of the major benefits of being on a SaaS platform. So we obtained anonymized data from willing participants, combed through it to see what insights we could get and packaged it as our first ever “Productivity Index.” We hope this type of visibility will make it easier for companies to look ahead, and make adjustments to sustain their revenue streams. For example, they’ll avoid slumps in productivity by correctly anticipating when employees will request vacation time, and adding fill-in help accordingly. But the helpful insight in this case isn’t about the most-requested time of year for vacation (it’s June through August, which you probably guessed). Rather, it’s learning what percentage of people plan to be away from work: 52 percent more than in the spring. This knowledge can help companies implement productive strategies. [...]

What else does the Replicon Productivity Index reveal? There’s much more than we can cover in a blog post, but many of the facts aren’t as easy to guess as you might think. For example, we all know it’s common for people to take an extra day off either before or after a holiday. But which of the following is NOT among the top three holidays that most often require an extra day of celebration or recovery? Memorial Day, Labor Day, Independence Day, or Thanksgiving. Find the answer in our press release, and prepare to hear much more about insights you can use, from our Productivity Index.

Even better, we moved up five spots from last year’s Branham300, which is an annual list of Canada’s most successful organizations in the Information and Communication Technology (ITC) industry. The same list recognizes organizations like Research In Motion and BCE, so we’re in good company!

This is an honor for everyone here at Replicon. And of course we couldn’t have done it without the incredible support of our customers – now totaling 7,300 organizations worldwide. Thank you so much for making this achievement possible and helping us make our products even better for everyone.

That’s a jump of four spots since last year’s Fast Growth 50, which is an annual ranking of the most growth-oriented businesses in the region. This achievement was made possible by the continued success of our market-leading web-based timesheet and expense management software.
